Dancing with the Starz and TAD

This past weekend we had two exciting events going on in the middle Tennessee area. We are so glad that our community strives to bring in master classes, choreographers, and companies to help expose our dance students to the art of dance.

The Tennessee Association of Dance Statewide Conference took place Saturday and Sunday. Students Katie, Madison, Maggie, David and Ms. Megan and Ms. Lindsey were up and out of Spring Hill at 6:00 AM Saturday morning. The day included four 1.5 hour dance classes, two performances, and a lot of running into friends from across the state.
Three of ours students took part in a class audition for summer scholarship. For some of them this was a whole new experience, but a great one never the less.

This event is for students ages 12 & up in an intermediate level or higher. It's a great affordable local conference that we will attend every year. It is always the 3rd week of October. So mark it on your calendars and we hope to see a lot more students attending next year!

Ballet program students Julianna, Reagan,Esabella and Emma all joined Ms. Howell in taking class at Nashville Ballet for a master class event called "Dancing with the Starz".

Company Dancers Kim Ratcliffe and Jon Upleger will be the Guest Teachers for this first Master Class with the “Starz” of Nashville Ballet. Additional classes will be held on January 28, 2011, and on April 15, 2011.

Never too young to start

Our combination 2 class is by far the biggest class we have ever had. The amazing thing is despite the class size or the student's age (6&7) it is one of the most well behaved hardest working classes I have ever taught. ( picture below)

Many of the kids have had at least one previous year of combination class but some have been with us since 3yrs starting in creative movement. The idea is to start the students off young so all things dance become second nature tithe student.

The challenge with teaching any age is making it relevant to that age group. Fundamentals and classroom etiquette can be learned by 3 year olds just as easy as 8 year olds. It may take some creative analogies and lots of repetition but you will get there.

This morning in creative movement, a class room of first year students, we discussed the difference between adiago and allergo. They were telling me what those differences were, listening to music and distinguishing the two, and dancing accordingly. They can also tell you stage direction, how to stand in line, and the proper way to thank your teacher in dance class. These little things are not the main goal of class, but through games and rhymes students pick them up. Students also focus on ballet terminology and basic steps. Monthly themes keep the students focused on learning one major step each month allowing it to really absorb into their memories.

So well creative movement may look like all fun and games it is a great foundation for a future dancer.

David Dorfman- Modern Field Trip

Modern Field Trip #1 2010
David Dorfman Dance
September 14th 2010
Vanderbilt Langford Theater

Modern students have a rare but wonderful opportunity this week to see the world premiere of David Dorfman's work entitled Prophets of Funk. The performance was upbeat, full of energy, and the sixty minutes of none stop amazing dancing flew by in a second.
After the performance David held a q&a with the cast members and any audience members interested in sticking around. The best part of the night was when cast members pulled audience members up onto stage to end the evenings performance with a group dance. Madison Hopkins had the courage to get on up and get funky.

The night before we went to a master class. What a great opportunity to see how a master choreographer works. David is the most down to earth teacher I have ever had. His light hearted energy and determination to learn everyones name was so welcoming. His movement combines a lot of action/reaction sort of moves. It's almost a choreographed improvisation at times. I really enjoyed getting my feet blistered up after being out of dance the past year with baby.

Thank you Dr. collins for taking the time to write an article about our school. We truly appreciate it.

Pioneers of Modern Dance

The modern program is expected to not only learn who the pioneers of modern dance were but who studied with who and where modern dance technique came from. At Tennessee Dance Arts we strive to teach modern dance as it was taught by the creators themselves. Megan generally teaches in the style of Mary Wigman, using influences from Laban. However, there is a heavy amount of Graham, Cunningham, and Horton technique fused in there. What we teach as modern dance today, while staying true to our roots is still a melting pot of techniques. You may ask what is the difference? Some studios teach contemporary ballet or lyrical jazz as modern dance. These new fusion genres do not equal true modern dance. There is also the new wave of post modern dance that doesn't stick true to the same beliefs of Wigman and Graham.

Students in the program learn about different dancers and choreographers each year. Last year they learned about Horton/Ailey, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham,Mary Wigman, Nikolais, Isadora Duncan, with a few new ones that went with our field trips, such as Trey McIntyre. (He calls himself contemporary, but his work is great).

This year students will research and discuss Doris Humphrey, Hayna Holm, Laban/Bartineff Analysis. After seeing the following fields trips they will review the work of David Dorfman, Doug Varone, Trisha Brown, and Momix. They also have two outside studies that include Dance Photography and Lois Greenfield. During this project students will get the opportunity to use a professional camera, lights, and backdrop to learn how to capture the art of dance. Dancers will also learn more on the subject of Dance or Movement Therapy.

Our modern classes are pure technique. An elective in our program is Choreography and Improvisation.
Students will have the opportunity to work on their own choreography that they can present in our Modern Showcase at TDAC's new black box theater.

Modern dance isn't just for the free spirits!
We encourage all our dancers to give it a try and require our ballet program to take at least 1 modern class once they hit a certain level. Modern dance allows the student to find their own movement, feel comfortable in their skin, and really become more body aware. Also, in the way the modern classes focus on technique and anatomy, the mechanics of the body students learn a set of skills that can virtually take them into any other classroom.

Nothing like Live Music

Tennessee Dance Arts now offers live piano accompaniment in their Ballet Program classes. We welcome Mrs. Whelchel to our TDAC Family. Mrs. Howell says, "She was AMAZING!!!!! I loved my classes and loved the feeling of being in a old classical pure technique class. Pure is pure. Classic is classic."

Read more about Mrs. Whelchel;

Christine Whelchel has been playing piano since age 4. She studied piano at The University of Memphis*, where she accompanied many instrumental soloists for recitals and auditions. In Memphis, Christine was the accompanist for the choir at First Assembly of God church and the Toscanini Chamber Ensemble. She has taught piano for 15 years and studied at the Suzuki Piano Institute at The University of Louisville and is currently the music director and organist/pianist for Redeemer Lutheran Church in Nashville.

Keeping Our Bodies Strong
We are so glad that many of our students are taking multiple classes and more intensive schedules. We want to stress the importance of fuel for our bodies. Please make sure your child eats before coming to class and brings water with them. Students who take multiple classes in a row should bring a snack for in between (apple, granola, etc). Students who will be at the studio from 3:00-9:00 should bring a meal with them (sandwich, salad, etc. ). Dancers are athletes and must have fuel to burn. We want to promote healthy bodies and not have students fall any sort of "not eating" pattern due to body issues or forgetting to bring food. All the teachers at TDAC feel strongly on this issue and will be encouraging any student that is spending multiple hours at the studio to bring snacks with them.

Welcome Mrs. Missy Tillman

We are so honored to have a new faculty member at TDAC. Mrs. Missy will be taking on a few Jazz classes this fall.

Missy began her formal dance training at age three, with the Chattanooga Ballet.  As she continued her studies there through high school, she became a member of the Chattanooga Ballet Children’s Company, and then the Corps de Ballet. These positions gave her opportunities to perform soloist, demi-soloist, and corps roles in The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, The Firebird, Les Sylphides, Don Quixote, The Magic Flute, Contemporary Music Symposium, Haydn’s Creation, and many modern and jazz works by guest choreographers.
Also during high school, Missy founded and directed Charis, a modern dance company housed at Chattanooga Christian School. Her contributions there included teaching modern and jazz classes, choreographing works for the company, and performing.  In college, Missy continued her modern dance training with an emphasis in Limon technique under the direction of Sharona Paller Rubinstein. During this time Missy was invited to become a member of the Macon Moving Company, in Macon, Georgia, performing many original modern works throughout the community. Missy recently had the privilege of choreographing for the DeRay Ministry’s Jr. Dance Company in Franklin TN.
Missy has also enhanced her training in ballet, modern, and jazz through a variety of summer workshops, master classes, and dance conferences, at places such as Ballet Magnificat, Harvard University, and the American Dance Festival, Tennessee Association of Dance, and an intensive summer conference in Washington D.C. During these experiences Missy was able to study with such artists as David Dorfman, Rennie Harris, Garth Fagan, Jeffery Bullock, Donna Faye Burchfield, Gerri Houlihan, and Kathy Thibodeaux.
Missy is a registered nurse, and when she is not dancing, she can be found teaching Zumba classes and sharing her love of movement with her three young daughters.

Spring Concert Review

Angelika Stegmann, Owner of Stegmann's Performing Arts wrote this article reviewing our Spring Concert.

Dancing in A Garden Tale With Squirrels

The parents of the little dancers who performed in this year’s recital “A Garden Tale” showed happy faces while waiting in the lobby. Not only were they excited to finally watch their children dance on stage but they didn’t have to drive the forty minutes to Columbia State Community College to do so.

Thanks to new principal Dr. Todd Campbell, Independence High School had opened their theater to local dance school Tennessee Dance Arts Conservatory, which showed an abundance of little garden critters in 2 performances on May 28 and 29. Nevertheless, before the first dance “Sunrise,” a solo performed by Katie Messina, artistic director Megan White gave out the 2010 awards.

Madison Hopkins, who performed a solo as the red Robin, received the “Student of the Year” award. The “Young Dancer Award” went to Delaney Toale, a Ballet 1 student dancing in “Perfect Petals,” and the “Most Improved” award went to the above-mentioned Katie Messina, who danced an impression as “The Fairy of Light” to live music performed by Doug Smith.

“Little Mousies” were chasing “Hungry Caterpillars and Beautiful Butterflies”; the “Perfect Petals” were followed by the “Bitty Bumble Bees”. Foxes, bunnies, and frogs were all part of the “Garden Tale,” with “Rolling Ivy” letting us take a glimpse into the woods. “Booming Black Widows’, “Fluttering Friends”, “Rocking Robins”, “Rhythmic Wood Peckers”, and “Garden Gnomes” all showed us their dances in various styles such as ballet, tap, jazz, and modern.

When the “Little Squirrel Ditty” tappers were dancing on stage, a bitty bumblebee could not keep her feet still. She shuffled along in the aisle to the music by Louis Jones before the second act concluded with Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake”, danced by girls of Ballet 3. Five swans on pointe began the dance, followed by a short solo of the only adult dancer, Cindy Bellini, and concluded with all swans, now without pointe shoes, in the dramatic climax.

The third act was opened with “Les Sylphides”, whose composer was mistakenly referred as Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky but should have been Frederic Chopin. The creatures of the night, the “Owls”, “Jail House Raccoons”, “Funky Skunks”, and “Blackbirds” finished the recital.

It was disappointing that so many parents left with their Creative Movement dancers after the intermission. It should be a dance school’s obligation to educate their dancers from early age on to appreciate other dancers.

A special mention deserves Gianna Curless, dancing in tap 1, jazz 1 and ballet 1 who stood out, thanks to her stage presence and her clean execution of the technique.

Fall Schedule

We have made a few changes to the fall schedule. It is now finalized and will be emailed to all our current students.
The website is mostly updated with class descriptions, dress code, tuition, and policies. The actual schedule page may be a few more days.

Note that we are adding a Music Appreciation class. This 1 hour class for students ages 8 & up touches on Music Theory, Music History, Group Piano and Basic Voice. This class is a 10 week workshop that will start after Labor Day. We are going to be sending out an email inquiring about when you all would like to see that in the schedule.

Lastly, the 1x a month tumbling class has not been set in stone. We're going to be taking a group of dancers 1 time each month to work with some coach's at Let It Shine. This will be for all different level students ages 8 & up. This group will more than likely meet on Fridays and pay a drop in fee.

Intermediate Dance Camp

Students this week took 25 hours of dance in 1 week. Most of them by day two were too sore to move, but the dancing went on.
The intermediate dance camp started off each morning with 1.5 of ballet. Then students rotated with classical jazz and musical theater jazz. Students learned numbers from Chicago, Sweet Charity, and Pajama Game. During lunch our resident licensed dietician discussed health and nutrition. After lunch students rotated with Modern, Improv, Choreography, Dance Media, and Pilates.

Students learned choreography by Ms. Lindsey and Ms. Brook. There is some video of them rehearsing on the last day of camp on our face book.

With Ms. Megan students learned about dance photography. Students experienced being the photographer and being the dancer. Each student had a chance to take pictures of their friends. Afterwards, all the pictures were uploaded and discussed.

During Improv and Choreography students were encouraged to find 3 interesting shapes. They used this shape to begin the choreography process, but we also captured them with some unusual light. The girls were in the photography mood so it was only natural.

DanceLife TV | Nan Giordano in Set Your Barre High

DanceLife TV | Nan Giordano in Set Your Barre High

Nan Giordano is a well respected women in the dance teaching industry. TDAC believes in her philosophy of raising the barre in dance education. Please click on the link above to listen to her speak a bit on dance education. plus see some cool dancing in the background.

An article telling a little bit more about Nan.

Imagine growing up with dance as a family business. That's what happened to Nan Giordano, who was "very little" forty years ago when her father, now a legendary teacher, started the school and unique concert dance company that came to be called Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago. Performing more than ever with Nan at the helm, the company has gone in new directions while maintaining her dad's vision. [] "I grew up just in awe of my father," she says. "It was such a wonderful upbringing. We were always going to performances. We lived in Paris for three months. We went to Germany. And the dance company--I thought it was the coolest thing in the world."
Internationally known and respected, the troupe founded and has sponsored the Jazz Dance World Congress since 1990 and this spring was negotiating on performances in China, Italy, and Brazil

Interview in the Informer

Christian Values in Dance Schools?
May 10, 2010 ⋅

Concerned parents sometimes wonder if they can trust a dance school to respect their Christian values in the choice of movements, music and costumes. Spring Hill does not have a dance school specialized in worship and liturgical classes but the dance schools in town are far from a big city, anonymous school where usually the only thing that counts is the survival of the fittest.

What do they offer Christian schools aside from worship classes? The first thing that comes to mind is to provide a safe and loving environment. Respect towards the teachers and towards each other is also essential. Teaching children, no matter what the subject is, should always be done with the goal to nurture the student’s spirits and their self-esteem.

Those are goals, which are pursued by the Tennessee Dance Arts Conservatory and Stegmann’s School of Performing Arts. Megan White, owner of the classical based TDAC, “My goal is to provide the students with good technique, classroom etiquette, and knowledge of dancers past and present.” Then she points out, “Our training goes beyond just dance education. As a teacher I believe that we are not only teaching children with the steps we show them or the words we use, but by our actions and interactions in the classroom.”

Bruce Stegmann, co-owner of SSPA, “The teachers in our school are gracious people with a kind and patient attitude. All of us are reaching for excellence in character and are motivated to be role models for our students. It is a grateful position to be in as a dance teacher when you can teach every student how to use their gift and talent and develop each one of them to their potential.”

White continues, “All children have the right to learn equally to be accepted and nurtured as individuals. We encourage our students to respect their instructors, their fellow classmates and themselves. I hope that the lessons learned in the classroom also translate into their everyday lives.”

The dance studios have a fun, relaxed atmosphere for families, providing structured classes and proper technique. A healthy and inspirational environment encourages and motivates students to reach their personal best. The movement and clothing is age appropriate in all dance styles. Music with questionable lyrics is not tolerated. White, “Tennessee Dance Arts Conservatory has a strict conservative dress code that honors traditional ballet attire but also keeps its students classically dressed and modest. All music and dance styles are appropriate and represent classical technique in its purest form. I hope and believe we are a positive outlet for children in the Spring Hill community.”

As dance teachers, we are not only dedicated to teach dance but also dedicated to be knowledgeable in early child development, psychology, and anatomy. Many times, we have to guide the students to make the right choices and steer their perspective from the individual to the group.

Being part of both, a great city and a growing dance community, we are proud to incorporate Christian values into our teachings and relations.

SSPA recital is May 23 at 7:00 PM at Father Ryan High School, TDAC recital is May 28 & 29 at 7:00 PM at Independence High School.

Their Talent Shows

This past month as school is wrapping up students are participating in Talent Show, Choir performances, and other school functions. Last week Haley Wilder performed a tap solo at Longview's 4th & 5th Choir Performance. Her broadway style solo to "Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows" was perfectly executed and wrapped up with a giant round of applause by her peers. Haley was the only student to perform a tap number in the mostly singing performance.
TDAC Jazz students Madison Gambill and Julianna LeRoy performed a high energy jazz number in their middle school's talent show. Their moves we're sharp and very together. Reagan Boone though she didn't perform a dance sang a beautiful song while playing guitar at that same talent show.

Katie Messina, performed her solo for the Spring Concert at the Spring Hill library in front a bunch of 3-4 year old adoring fans. This coming Saturday May 15th 10:00, more of our students will be debuting Spring Concert originals at the Spring Hill Library.

We are dancers. We come to class to perfect our technique and craft. We are performers. Class is practice for performance.

Congrats ladies. Job well done!

ARTS

Local dance students pursue community Musical Theater productions.
April 23, 2010 ⋅ Email this post ⋅ Print this post ⋅ Post a comment
This spring multiple students from the Tennessee Dance Arts Conservatory were on stage performing!

David Moore a regular at The Old School Theater and Maury County Arts Guild was casted as Jeff Thatcher in Tom Sawyer this past month. David says, “I loved it and was able to use my dance technique that I learned. It made it so much easier to learn the dance rountines needed for the play.” “Old School Theater’s Tom Sawyer proved to be a great success. I had an absolute blast in this show! I was so encouraged by our director, fellow cast members, and the massive amounts of people who came to see the show!” says Laura Irvine.

The Maury County Arts Guild’s musical “Singing in the Rain” featured Kirsten Nelson an advanced pointe and modern dancer cast as a “Broadway Melody” lead dancer. Kirsten says, “It was a wonderful first time experience in theater. I loved my part and hope to be involved in community theater again in the future.”

Madison Hopkins a young pre professional studying dance five days a week at the TDAC debuted on stage as an extra with professional company Trey McIntyre Project. Madison spent a week rehearsing with the company, taking class, and learning what it means to be a professional dancer.

Bravo to local students for taking on the Arts!
